What to know about TennCare and payer rules
State payer rules decide how fast a practice is paid. These points come from TennCare's own pages, linked below. Check each plan's current provider manual before you rely on a deadline.
TennCare claims go through managed care organizations
TennCare's provider page names three managed care organizations (MCOs): BlueCare Tennessee, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Tennessee and Wellpoint. Each has its own provider portal.
The filing clock is 120 days for MCO claims
TennCare policy PAY 13-001 (revised June 1, 2022) sets 120 calendar days for claims submitted to an MCO, with exceptions such as retroactive eligibility, third party liability and school-based therapy. Claims filed late are automatically denied.
Appeals start with the plan
When a provider disagrees with a claim outcome, an appeal (a reconsideration) goes to the MCO first. If that does not settle it, a complaint can go to the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, TennCare Oversight.
Each payer has its own rules
Commercial plans, Medicare and TennCare each have their own filing limits, edits and appeal steps. A billing company should work every payer by its own rules.

Questions to ask any billing company about Tennessee
Use these with Medlink or anyone else you are considering.
Step 1: Which TennCare plans do you bill, and who works each one?
Each MCO has its own portal, authorization rules and appeal process.
Step 2: How do you track the 120-day filing limit?
A missed deadline is an automatic denial, so ask how claims are watched before the window closes.
Step 3: Who works my denials and appeals, and how will I see the results?
Ask for the reports you would receive and how often.
Step 4: Who will I talk to when I call?
At Medlink it is the same people each time.
